Social competence is a holistic approach emphasizing specific parts of social interaction. These include prosocial skills during play, communication skills required during social interactions, social problem solving as well as self-regulation of behaviors underlying the development of social behaviors.
ROTC utilizes a small group format with an activity-based approach strengthening social competence with hands-on experiences while integrating sensory processing strategies as needed. Peer models are usually included.
Groups will focus on:
- Social and play behaviors to increase cooperative play skills and improve frustration tolerance
- Pro-social skills to increase interpersonal behaviors including taking turns, giving and receiving feedback
- Self-regulation skills which affect socialization
- Communication skills used during social interactions
- Social decision making-learning to pick up and read non-verbal cues, increasing repertoire of strategies for conflict resolution
